Also note that if your iPad had a passcode when it was lost, the information on it cannot be accessed. And if it had information synced or backed up to iCloud, that information is protected by your password. Be careful not to divulge the password and be alert for the possibility of messages or emails that are pretending to be from Apple but are actually attempting to get you to log into a fake site that looks like Apple and in so doing, divulge your password.

Facilities to manage/recover a lost or stolen device are predicated on Find My iPad being enabled on the device before it was lost.
