Those figures refer to laboratory testing under controlled conditions, not real world use.

You should NEVER submerge any device to any depth that's rated less than 50M water resistant.

That is under strictly controlled laboratory situation. iPhone is NOT waterproof. It's never been advertised as waterproof. And that means if your hone gets wet under any condition and is damaged from getting wet, like just about all smart phones sold by any manufacturer, it is not covered under warranty.
