what happened to my gmail emails?
So I cleaned up some emails, and was careful to select only the ones I wanted deleted, and now almost all but 7 emails are gone. How did this even happen?

Please check if the mails are available at mail.google.com. If the mails are available there then it's probably a filter which you might have applied. Review the below article to find out.

Change which emails are shown - https://support.apple.com/guide/mail/mlhl7fa3a90d/14.0/mac/11.0
If the mails are missing from Gmail website as well, you'll be required to contact Gmail to check if they can retrieve it.
