Apple Watch will not update and says it is “unable to check for update”, but I am connected to internet?

My watch has been unpaired and disconnected from my phone for months. Every time I try to repair it I get the same message (shown in screenshot) that won’t let me move forward with updating to pair. I’m connected to internet so I don’t understand?
