Why does apple pay keeps asking me to hold my phone near the reader if i'm paying online

So i'm trying to buy some stuff online on my phone with apple pay for the first time, the problem is, after i enter my password or face id, it's written to 'hold my phone near the reader''.. there is no necessity for that if i'm paying online right? I've already tried to pay on the app (etsy) and on safari too. Maybe i'm just missing something but it's really stressing me out.

iPhone 11, iOS 14

You should just select Apple Pay on the website and your phone should authenticate (Face ID) and that's it. If you're getting hold near reader it seems you might be using Apple Pay as you would in a store? Through wallet?

Eg. If I add money to my Starbucks card in-app, I select add money, then tap Apple Pay. Once I do that, the Apple Pay dialogue opens for my Touch ID. I hear the success chime, and that's it. Are you doing something else in the sequence?
