All SSD like to have 15-20% free storage at all times to function properly, ie TRIM and remove garbage collection etc

Do the math and come up with a plan.

Looking to clear 3GB for the bare minimum to get past an install issue, sounds like you need to do more housecleaning beyond the basics— otherwise you are asking for continued issue as you move forward.
