I have an unusual project with a rather large number of audio files across multiple but not too many tracks.
The loading was working well until I hit some type of limit and Logic now refuses to load any more files.
Is there a hard limit? What is it?

The issue was resolved. I still don't know if there's such a limit on the number of audio files one can add across multiple tracks.
The main problem was a connection between the Mac and the file server where these files live. It went stale and provoked the error.
This project is not for live recording. It's only for playback purposes so file read latency is not an issue. However, total failure to access any files is a problem to be considered.

Some work-arounds: Freeze your tracks, export/bounce the tracks.
