I lost my airpods recently and i've been trying to find them. My sister misplaced hers at around the same time, and hers had a last known location but mine show absolutely nothing. i know they can't be located if they're offline or out of battery, but why don't they have a last location? please help!

Sorry, I should have been more succinct. To directly answer your question, only the first one has to be true, to have your AirPods show up with last known location. However, this is only theoretically true. In actual practice, it doesn't always work that way.
so if those things aren't true, i won't have a "last known location" in find my?
