Can I exchange my iPad that I got as a gift?

I recently got an ipad as a gift.

I really love it but it’s not the exact one i wanted. I was wondering if there was a way to return it and buy the new one that i wanted? I have hardly used it and i really want the newest generation as i’m going into college. Is there a way i can do this without notifying the person that gifted it to me?
