Activation Lock

I lost my phone 2 years ago and I've put it in lost mode since then. I never got any mail regarding any activity being done on the phpne . But recently i got the following mail -

Activation Lock is requesting your password on this device Device Name (Iphone 8). (‘The iphone i lost’)

I donot understand what this mail is about and why did i receive it.
