My default browser is Firefox on both my mini and air but Safari launches everytime

I have Firefox selected as my default browser on my MacAir and mini. Both running Mojave. everytime I boot up either computer, safari is launched. How can I stop Safari from launching? Do I need to remove from my systems?

MacBook Air 11″, macOS 10.14

Please check Open items automatically when you log in on Mac.

Change General preferences on Mac - Apple Support

Choose your "Default web browser" from the General Preferences tab in System Preferences.

Firefox is shown as my default browser yet from a cold start, Safari is opened on initial screen. I have to shut it down every time and then click my Firefox icon
