For example:

if you deleted your Gmail account from the Mail. app, ... but you didn't close your Gmail account itself,

your Mail would still be available on GMail's server.

Then you could retrieve your contacts by logging in to your Gmail account where they are likely to still be available to you.

OR

You could likely link the Gmail account to Mail again, and retrieve your contacts that way!
