Do I need to enter my password to update my Mac?

Twice, today and two months ago, I get a message that Apple wants to update my computer. No explanation. I have to enter my password. Is this malware; or, why do you need to update my Mac?

If this computer is running El Capitan - you have posted in the El Capitan Forum - There have not been any Apple Updates for El Capitan in Years. Then the message received was Bogus / Scam. If the computer is running Mojave, Catalina or Big Sur - this might be Genuine
