Software update

I am using MacBook with software OS X Version 10.9.5 of late 2008 .is it possible for me to update with the latest software update. Because i cant install applications coz they need latest versions. Pls advice

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and click on El Capitan. Your computer can't be upgraded past it.
