Closing applications
I’m getting a message saying “your memory is low please close some applications” how do I do that. I don’t think I have a lot of apps open.

I suggest that you restart your Mac and see if the problem occurs again.
If it does, restart in Safe Mode (hold down Shift key at startup, which will take much longer than normal). Then restart agin normally, check to see if the problem is gone.

You can use the Activity Monitor app to see what is using your memory as well. It may be system processes that are utilizing a lot of RAM.
Besides the two great advices so far, how much free space do you have on your Hard Drive?
