I have had lots of trouble with the Mac email program connecting to the gmail.com server and getting mail. It breaks every time there is an OS upgrade. I fool around with various mail parameters and it eventually comes back but is very unpredictable.
When you visit http://www.gmail.com/ are you able to read your mail?
Is your Gmail configured to send messages via POP or IMAP on their website? Make sure you use the same standard and server settings recommended for the type of email you choose on the settings on Google's website.
IMAP stores on server by default, with the option to save to your Mac folders.
POP stores on your Mac by default, and you will want to backup those folders separately, as they are going be stored as part of your Users -> yourname -> Library folder.

I can read and send email fine at gmail.com always. I am using IMAP. It is only my iMac desktop that has this problem. My MacBook works fine always. They appear configure the same. Started problem with Catalina and I still have it in Big Sur. Thanks for reply.
So you've tried the default IMAP configuration as opposed to the Gmail configuration in the add new email account?
Have you verified the ports are the same as Google requires on their website?
My Apple Mac email will stop reading new mail from the gmail.com server. I try various things with accounts and eventually it comes back but never the same thing twice. Happens with OS updates.
