There are many countries where Apple does not yet sell books. Perhaps you are in one? See

If so, you have to get your books from another store and probably read them with a different app.

Thank you Tom, this was right under my nose! Hahaha! Problem solved. We only receive public domain library books in South Africa at this stage.
