I have an older version on my desktop mac and wonder how I can update it to the newest latest Mac OS.

iMac 27″, macOS 10.12

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which iMac model you have, click on High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur.
