to be clear, there’s no way to install a single OTF or TTF font I have? I have to install a 3rd party app that has fonts, first? https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/install-and-manage-fonts-ipad952422ba/ipados that seems very up-Apple.

As far as I know, you do need a 3rd party app. Some have fonts, some probably don't. I usually suggest AnyFont or iFont. Works fine, but user installed fonts can only be used in apps that have a font menu, like Pages. You can't change the overall font of an iOS device.

Thank you, Tom! It seems so weird, with iPads being so advanced now, keyboard and mouse support, etc.

Some things are still quite restricted. For example there is no way to have a custom hardware keyboard layout, even via an app.
