How to delete a subscription and download any app without asking to add a payment method

Note:

• "If you don’t see Cancel Subscription, then the subscription is already canceled and won't renew." The "Expires" date means the current subscription will just run until then.

• Deleting an app does not cancel a subscription.

• If you don’t cancel trials more than 24 hours before your renewal date, your subscription might renew.

• If you don't have an Apple device, see the options near the very bottom of the support document

As to your second question, I have seen many people ask if you need to add a payment method to download even free items. By empirical observation the answer seems to be "yes" although I am puzzled by this because I download only free apps and have never had to enter a payment method. So add a payment method and then remove it if you wish.
