Has anyone done this successfully? I have a Thunderbolt 2 cable, but before I buy the (CAD$59) Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter, I want to be sure it will work. Thanks for any advice.

Note that your iMac must be a certain group of iMacs from 2009 through 2014, and can NOT be running any MacOS later than 10.13 High Sierra.
Exact cables specified MUST be used.
MacBook Pro from 2020 and later is explicitly NOT supported.

Ah, right. Well, the answer for me is that it won't work, as I'm running Catalina. ("Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier on the iMac used as the external display. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later.") Thanks again.
Consider booting the iMac from High Sierra on an external drive to use the iMac as a display.
Installing a different macOS on a separate drive does not do anything to the MacOS on the internal boot drive, or any other drive.
