How do you find messages from 1 year ago ?

If you’re using messages in iCloud and did not elect to “keep forever” in message settings, then they are gone and not recoverable. If you did choose to keep them forever, they should be on your device unless you manually deleted them.
If you don’t use messages in iCloud, then you would need a backup from a year ago to have any hope of recovering them.
