how to manage memory deleting with YOSEMITE OS?

I want to install new os. i am using Yosemite now. i have to delete some files to get memory available for new os. how can I manage the memory? I am using MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014).

Copy files you do not need over to an external hard drive, when they have copied over successfully

then you can delete them from your mac.

Refer to it as storage and not memory.
