How do I update to the latest version on the older machine?

I have MacBook Pro (13-inch, mid 2012), I am on El Capitan, Version 10.11.6. How can I upgrade to the latest version?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download Catalina. That model isn't capable of Big Sur.
