I’ve tried several times to update my MacBook from 11.1 to 11.2.2. Every time I try it stalls in the “preparing” step with about 15 minutes to go. I’ve tried rebooting to no avail. Suggestions? TIA.

Okay, I’ve tried safe boot twice. Each time the “safe boot” indicator disappears after I log in, leading me to believe I’m going from safe boot to normal boot. The update still stops in “preparing” mode with 15 minutes left.
Follow @Dialabrain advise only this time Shutdown Router. Shutdown computer. Restart Router. Restart as @dialabrian suggested and try again. The wait time may say 15 minites but in Real Time expect 30 minutes, at 10 Minutes expect 20 or more and so on a so forth until eventually - fingers crossed - Bingo and fingers crossed.
Well for what it's worth. it doesn't gradually run the time down. It sits at 15 mins for a bit, then 10 mins for a bit, then 5 mins for a bit, until it finishes.
How much free space is on the drive? How long was it "stalled" @ 15 mins?
111 GB of 250 available. It stalled for about 20 minutes each time.
So start up in safe mode, then try installing?

I got a red “safe boot” in the upper right corner which disappeared as I started to open the update. The desktop looks the same with all icons present. Shouldn’t it look somewhat empty?
Not really. Safe Mode only prevents third-party apps from starting. What I can't remember is if the Safe Mode label disappears when on Big Sur.
If you still have problems, try powering you Mac off then on and try again.
