I just bought a new MacBook Air 2017 13 inch 8 GB with Catalina. The updates downloaded BigSur for six hours, and then the installer says it needs 3 GB more to install. How come?

What can I do to install BigSur? I bought this model after being told it is eligible for BigSur, and I have verified that in the list of compatible models. But the installer says there is not enough storage to install and it needs 3 GB more.
