My mac says no updates available, but the apps store will not download apps because the software needs to be updated?

Can i force a software update? I have 10.10.5 but need 10.15 or higher to download most apps. Are there any options outside of buying a new mac?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which Mac model you have, download El Capitan, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur through the links provided. If its maximum OS is Mojave or earlier, you'll need a newer Mac.
