No sound when making or receiving calls

When I answer an incoming call on my iPhone 7 plus, I can hear no sound, even though the phone shows the call is connected. This is also true when I make a call. If I reboot the phone, the problem resolves itself however, it returns a short time later.

I've also noticed that when the phone is in this state, the voice to text function does not 'hear' what I am saying.... there are no sound waves that appear on the pattern bar.

I have checked all settings and reset the network settings. The only other thing I can think of is to reset the entire phone, but I am reluctant to do that.

Any idea what the problem is?

If you only hear through speaker phone mode --> If your iPhone is stuck in headphone mode - Apple Support

If the above options do not mitigate the issues then Contact your carrier and then Contact Apple Support

Thank you for your thoughts, but it is clearly not an obstruction or anything related to the microphone settings, as I pointed out in my post. When the problem fixes itself after a reboot but then returns a short time later, that should be pretty obvious. Never the less, I appreciate your attempt.
