Kind "Quicktime" file can't be opened with Quicktime Player

I have a file (*.mov) that when I Get Info is actually a QuickTime Movie (Get info -> General -> Kind -> QuickTime Movie) yet when I try to open using QT I get the error "The file isn't compatible with QuickTime Player". I can open with VLC or IINA however.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks

That seems to be a DV-encoded 4:3 SD NTSC movie with 12-bit/32 kHz audio (usually 16-bit/48 kHz audio was recommended to prevent audio sync issues, BTW). But maybe it is erroneously in a .mov container?

I created file by exporting (via QT Player 7 Pro) PAL .dv to NTSC .dv which Big Sur QT Player played OK. I then got a similar file as yours by changing the .dv suffix to .mov. Then I got "The file isn't compatible with QuickTime Player" alert.

So what if you just change .mov suffix to .dv -- does QT Player then play it?
