Opening Microsoft Office for Mac Documents on a PC

Hello! I have Microsoft Office on my personal Mac and on my work PC (version 2019). How can I work on the same document using both systems? I got this error message on my PC when attempting to open the Mac-based Excel document: “The operating system is not presently configured to run this application.” Do I need to save the Mac-based Excel document with a particular extension so that it is compatible with my PC? Thank you for your assistance.

Office 2019 Excel documents open on both Windows and Mac computers. Excel documents have the extension xlsx.
