Unless the operating system already suggests a suitable driver when trying to add a printer, you may want to check whether the (Dec 11, 2020) HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS package download from Apple at https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US would work. If necessary, reset the printing system. Verify that your LaserJet 1020 printer is recognised, then look for a driver for a LaserJet 1022 (1.6.1). There have been some reports about difficulties adding a LaserJet 1020, so you may have to look upon this as an experiment.

Have you been running this printer on a mac before?

If you go to the HP support page for your printer you find out that this printer is

not compatible with macs as the operating system selector will only

offer updates for Linux and Windows machines.

This worked perfectly. My HP Laserjet 1020 is working now.
