Have the same unit and yes during the UpGrade process the fan was blowing at full speed for sometime. Once the installation was completed, it calmed down to normal. What I discovered, during the upGrade process, the EFI Boot ROM and iBridge software were being updated to handle the New Big Sur.

The EFI Boot ROM is the very basic and lowest level software that boots even before the macOS and controls all the Hardware and then passes that information to the OS and then the OS takes over there after.

Hum, with due diligence and having a Time Machine Backup, the Empty Space Requirements and two Tested Clones each to separate external drives - one can attempt again.

Just some addition information - my 2018 Retina MBA w / T2 Fingerprint reader, under Catalina 10.15.7 had the EFI Boot ROM 1037.147.4.0.0 and iBridge 17.16.16610.0.0,0. Now under Big Sur 11.1 has EFI Boot ROM 1554.60.15.0.0 and iBridge 18.16.13030.0.0.,0
