safari 14.0.2 start page Favorites bar icons missing

Hello, I don't have icons in my favorites bar in the start page anymore. But I can still see them in bookmarks and tabs. When I go to ~/Library/Safari/Touch Icons Cache, icon images are also still there. Does anyone know how to restore them? Thanks in advance.

Boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and check there to see if the problem persists.  Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Yes, CleanMyMac is the source of many Macs' poor performance. Download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to include the report in your reply.

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the Etrecheck's Privacy preference pane so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Also click and read the About info to further permit full disk access.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine what might be causing the problem.

I've done those things and the issue is still there. When I open the apple website, the icon is loaded but disappears again after quitting and reopening Safari. For the rest of the favorites webpages, nothing shows up even if I open the webpage and wait for a while. However, I'm grateful to have known about two apps above. I think they'll come in handy from time to time.

Hello Sir, I'm sorry to have taken some time to reply. I booted the OS in safe mode and it didn't take any longer than a normal reboot. But the issue still remains. My Mac OS is up to date. I cleared cache files using CleanMyMacX which I think caused the issue. I deleted CleanMyMacX after that and did not clear caches again. I tried updating the Mac OS but it was still not resolved.

I don't see any of the usual suspects but you do have some residual files left over from your Kaspersky Internet Security software.

You can remove them by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For Kaspersky software you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains kaspersky

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop or Trash bin in the Dock for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Also you should uninstall Flash according to Adobe's instructions. It's end of life was on 12/31/2020 and all reputable websites no longer use it. Then now use HTML 5 which all modern bowsers use.

Go back into the Etrecheck report/App, go to the Clean Up section and remove the files listed there.

I tried deleting all the bookmarks and adding them again. It worked! (Well, kind of). After one restart, only 1 icon was there and the rest disappeared. After deleting, adding icons again and restarting for 3 times, just a few webpages are left without icons. I think the cache is building itself up and i hope my safari will eventually be back to normal. Thank you so much for taking your time and effort to help me with this. Cheers!
