If you do not have a backup, there is not much hope.

You can stop using the Mac so nothing is overwritten. You can google for file recovery software; some are expensive, but also have a free trial.

If that does not work, then the files are gone. Good time to make sure you have a current backup all the time.

Do you have a TimeMachine backup? In that case, you should find it there (TimeMachine makes backups every 2 hours by default)
