2 kids each of their own ipads, but are sharing an apple id and apps. Each of them will imessage or facetime me, but i dont know how to tell which kid is contacting me. any way to differentiate the ipads using same apple id? i'd really rather not set them up another apple id with a new email account, and they also have tons of shared app stuff so it would be a headache.

Apple ID is not meant to be shared.
You need to create for each their own Apple ID.

With Family sharing you can share apps, books, music purchases.
And also you can FaceTime them individually or together in a group if they have the compatible iPads
Note: To use Group FaceTime video calls, you need iOS 12.1.4 or later, or iPadOS on one of these devices:
iPhone 6s or later, iPad Pro or later, iPad Air 2 or later, iPad mini 4 or later, iPad (5th generation) or later, or iPod touch (7th generation). Earlier models of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch that support iOS 12.1.4 can join Group FaceTime calls as audio participants.

You would need to use a different ID on one of the iPads to know who was contacting you. For the apps, you could set up Family Sharing to allow sharing of the apps.
