pairing my IPhone X to my 2009 iMac

I have an iPhone X running on iOS 14.3. When I try to connect it to my 2009 later iMac running on macOS High Sierra version 10.13.6 they will not connect. After selecting "install software update" and trying to install for about 10 minutes or so, I get an error message saying software problem. Can anyone help explain how to connect my iPhone to my imac? Thanks.
