How do I back up my phone when I keep getting messages each day saying it has not been backed up. I have plenty of storage

I went through a period of time a year or so ago when my iPhone 8 was not regularly backing up when connected in the manner you describe. Sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't and I never could figure out what was going on. Seems like it started backing up as expected after the iOS 14.x upgrade. It always puzzled me.
Back it up manually while the iPhone is on Wi-Fi and plugged in to power.
Settings > [your Apple ID] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back up now.
What do I do with the message “your iPhone has not been backed up for 36 days” when I have plenty of storage and my phone is on WiFi, locked and plugged in???
