there's no option for software updates on my mac

How do i update software on my mac if there is no update software option in system preferences?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.12

If you're referring to the OS, back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which MacBook Pro model you have, download High Sierra, Catalina, or Big Sur through the links provided.

If you're referring to an application, check the Updates tab in the Mac App Store, or the developer's website, or use an updater built into the application if there's one.
