how do I reduce the amount of space Mail is using

I am almost our of disc space, mostly due to 47 GB in Mail. I have 200GB storage but it is not being used. What do I do to open up space on my MacBook pro

sort you old emails by SIZE, and discard attachments and delete the biggest boat-anchors.
