I’ve made a Christmas playlist which is a mixture of iTunes purchased music and Apple Music but when I shuffle the playlist it will only shuffle a handful of songs missing many out and seems to miss the same ones each time
when I look at the “playing next” you can see exactly what songs are in the “shuffle” which is less than half of what’s in the playlist

Playlists are a great feature of the Music app, and we know how important it is to for all the songs to play as expected. Are you having issues with both purchased songs and Apple Music songs, or only one of those? Have you attempted to create a new playlist to see if the same issue would occur? If not, let's create a new playlist to see if the same issue continues.

The playlist is made up from iTunes purchased music and Apple Music,
ive deleted the playlist and made a new one several times and the same issue occurs.
the playlist consists of around 40 songs yet the shuffle list only consists of 20
i can play the playlist in its order fine but as shuffled will only play half

With the issue continuing with new playlists, and only happening with shuffle it's recommended to reach out to Apple via the Get Support website.
