what is the latest os for my iMac 27 running 10.13.6 currently? I just tried Mojave, catalina and after pressing download button i get the message that this software can not be installed to my computer. Why not?

Nope, it cannot go beyond 10.13.6. The reason being is Mojave requires a GPU that has Metal, that functionality was not available until the 2012 iMacs were introduced. And before you ask, no your iMac cannot be upgraded to have Metal GPUs. If you want to go beyond 10.13.6, it is time to buy a new Mac. You may want to consider one of the new Mac minis, extremely fast and Big Sur was optimized for the M1 processor.

27" iMacs have been made since late 2009, we have no idea which year you own. Please provide that information.
mine says mid 2010's. I didn't think that was that important because under the compatibility requirements for the mojave or catalina it says requires 10.8 or later or something to that effect
Your 2010 iMac is running the highest OS level it can. You need a 2012 iMac or newer to run any higher macOS version.
It can only go to 10.13.6, anything beyond and it lacks the right hardware to be compatible. Considering it is 11 years old, you should consider replacing it.
this is the first issue I have had with this great computer. According to MacWorld my computer should be able to upgrade to Mojave if its Late 2009 or later. Thanks for the help
mac mini may be worth looking at but what monitor would you recommend that compares to my iMac 27 display? This is a home computer.
