cannot receive sound alerts when iphone 11 is locked and connected to bluetooth

is there a fix to enable sound alerts when the phone is in lock, bluetooth is on to enable connection to my Apple watch? The sound alerts work when bluetooth is turned off which is not good as it impacts the watch function and also the Australian Covid Safe app will not work without the Bluetooth connection. The app is necessary for contact tracing.

jdl222,

Thanks for getting back to us and for providing those additional details. That's very helpful for us to gain a better understanding. What you're experiencing is expected behavior. It says in an Apple Support document that, "Notifications go to either your Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both." Here's the article with that information, along with additional details: Notifications on your Apple Watch

Hi jdl222,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. If we're understanding correctly, you're unable to hear sound notifications from your Apple Watch when it's paired to your iPhone while it's locked. We'll be happy to help.

To help isolate this behavior, we recommend to follow the steps outlined in this helpful article: Change the audio and notification settings on your Apple Watch

You'll want to verify that the alert volume is increased, along with making sure that mute and Do Not Disturb is not turned on.

In addition, you can restart both the Apple Watch and the iPhone to see if that helps.

Please keep us posted with the results.

Kind regards.

Hi ZnickZ

Thank you for your reply. What helped is that changing the volume control for the watch from “default” to “prominent” makes the tap on the watch more pronounced. However what I was hoping for was to enable both the watch and the iphone to simultaneously receive an actual sound alert(chime or whatever). Currently, the iphone does not make a sound alert for messages when in lock. The watch does make a tap alert. The only way I can get an actual sound alert for messages on the iphone when it's in lock is by switching off Bluetooth. Doing this drops the connection with the Apple watch. It may be that it's not possible to have simultaneous sound alerts on both devices but as I am not tech savvy I thought I would ask. My preference is that both devices can actually make alert sounds in the same way as occurs when receiving calls.

My thanks once again for your assistance.

regards
