I don't want the iMac showing up on my macbook. with everything I've tried when I delete from my laptop desktop it disappears from my iMac, too.
can I erase everything on iCloud and start all over?

It sounds like you may have inadvertently enabled "Desktop and Documents" on iCloud Drive.
Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support explains how to use the feature, and describes how to "Turn off Desktop and Documents."

worked great with my iMac.
unfortunately when I used the same on my laptop, most of the desktop was erased.
when I went to my back up, it hadn't been working since sept.
so I lost some things, but I'll know more next time.

Yes, especially if you have no desire to use that feature of iCloud.
