Missing older messages new computer

I just reinstalled Catalina and then did a "clean install" of all my apps, and copied over all my user files from a backup. (I.e., I did not use Migration Assistant). Now when I launch Messages app, I see only the messages (sent by any device) for the last few days. The hundreds or thousands of messages sent and received over the last years are missing. Can I recover them?
