i have a perpetual licence on my iMac, but it keeps adking me to put existing apps such as Word into the trash and download new ones directly from Microsoft. if I do this, will I have to pay for the new downloads

I have a perpetual licence for Microsoft Office apps, but my Mac keeps asking me to put the existing apps in the trash and download new ones directly from Microsoft. If I do this will I have to pay for the new downloads

Older 32bit versions of Microsoft Office such as 2011 will not run in Catalina. You will have to purchase newer versions. Or, you could use LibreOffice which is free and works with Microsoft Office files.
