14.1 sending read receipts automatically even though toggled off in settings

Just spent some time chatting with an apple agent. We learned that the read receipts are only be sent when you text yourself. (I do this to remind myself to do things.) When I text with someone else using iMessage, they do not receive the read receipt.

If an agent tells you to back up, restore iPhone to factory status then restore from back up, don’t do it without checking that someone else is getting the receipt.

The issue has been reported as a bug.

Before updating to the latest iOS 14.1 as told on your post what was your earlier iOS version. Then you can look into the iOS changes that has happened between the earlier version on your iPhone and this new version that you have updated now. 

This will give you a broader idea of the issue, if it is directly linked to the iOS version or is triggered by something else.

I am having the same problem. My previous version was iOS 14.
