Hello James wilson,
I hope you are talking about a Apple recommended adaptor because there are many such cheap adaptors which doesn’t do the job properly.
Meanwhile I suggest to try a Bluetooth adapter in this case, (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bluetooth+adapter&sprefix=bluetooth+ada&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_13). And if you would like to try one of these make sure to buy a quality adapter because there are many cheap adapters in the market.
Best Regards.

Bluetooth.
Thanks, but the speakers are antediluvian wired affairs, you might remember the type.
I use a set of powered computer speakers with mine at night at home, and have used them for multiple iPhones. So I would say, yes, they work.
Thank you both. We have that adaptor and cannot get either phone to send a signal to the speaker. Sounds like a bad adaptor.

Any other hardwired aux speakers to try? If so, try them.
Elsewise, try a new adapter.
