My IMac (mid 2014) has thunderbolt ports and standard usb ports. When backing up to a hard drive, must i use a hard drive with a thunderbolt connection or can I use standard usb connection?
What external hard drives would be best for compatibility?

For backups I use rotating hard drives and USB cables. No need to get expensive Thunderbolt drives for backups like Time Machine.

I recommend the OWC Mercury Elite Pro drives as they are very reliable and are backed with great customer support and warranties. And they are reasonably priced. I have a 6 TB model to backup my 2.5 GB on multiple drives - one should have a drive about 2-3 times the size of what they are backing up.
