Connecting an HDMI Monitor to Thunderbolt

I'm looking at getting a new MacBook. I've never used Thunderbolt before. Since the new MacBooks only have Thunderbolt ports, will there be any issue with connecting an external monitor to it?

I currently have a monitor with DVI. It has a DVI-HDMI adaptor on it. I then connect a HDMI cable to my Mini DisplayPort. Would using a HDMI to Thunderbolt cable suffice? Or are there any limitations with connecting via Thunderbolt?

Using a HDMI to Thunderbolt 3, you should not have any problems connecting to an external monitor.
