I’ve erased my hard drive to give this iMac to a friend. I’m having trouble reinstalling the OS, it’s trying to install El Capitan on disk utilities (CMD + R) but after the restart says it couldn’t complete. Any advice on how to install it by other means?

If you don't have the original install disks and you have access to a newer Mac, you could try creating an El Capitan USB bootable installer…

If they are a good friend I wouldn't burden them with a seriously obsolete iMac that they can't get serviced, can't run modern software, etc.
Thanks, the purpose of me giving it to them was to see if they were ok using Mac operating systems vs. Microsoft which they’re used to. I think it will probably put them off! Recon I’ll just stick it on eBay or something. Thanks for the help
Use the Retail Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD that you originally used, then let the new owner set it up and upgrade to the later macOS.
You're welcome. I think it might put them off Macs trying to use a Mac that old. :)
